Generally it's because they are a hot girl so they add them.

It makes people feel good about themselves. Also, people figure that their "fake friends" will post stuff that interests them.

I do not have a facebook, and im certainly no expert on why people are the way they are but I think it comes from their desire to be liked and accepted. When online you don't really have to show your real self, so meeting a stranger online that's far away you can pretend to be whatever or whoever and chances are they will like you because they don't know any different. Its a fake sense of fulfillment. It makes them happy to be liked. I think this kinda introverts people to an extent. Instead of going into public and meeting real people (which can be hard work) they hide at home and have strangers like them .
p.s. you are smart for doing what your doing and only having real friends online, Its safer and more fulfilling.

I have some "fake friends" on facebook because we play a common game and exchange things on the feed. Other than that, I have no contact with them.
