I think it depends. I don't send requests to people I don't know, nor do I accept requests from people I don't know. I know every single person on my friends list and it consists of 800+ people. I don't consider myself popular though. Most of those people, I went to school with (elementary, middle and high school), coworkers throughout the years that I'm still cool with and hang out with and people I've met sporadically that I have a good connection with. I still don't consider myself popular though. I just know a ton of people and am friends with a lot of people, good friends.
