He's interested in what you're doing. So, either way he hasn't forgotten you. If you ended on a good note, he is probably just keeping up on you. If you ended on a bad note, he is probably hoping to hear how crappy your life is since he isn't in it.

it means he wanted to add you. there's nothing wrong with adding an ex especially if you were good friends. he just wants to see how your doing and say whats up.

Oh... he just want you to know that he think that "you are just a friend" of his. Nothing more. And also by doing this, he gets to know what to do you think about him now?
This is critical situation. If you had good breakup, then just add him. Else, its not worth to add..
