Talk to him about things you enjoy. Ask him how he feels about certian topics, get a conversation going. You can't just ask questions if it cannot be extended. Don't talk too often, and don't talk too much when it seems he isn't interested in talking.

And I think that if you wanna be 'close' friends with him, there has to be some effort from him, too. Just saying ..
No really though, I do know what you mean.. be friendly, but don't be overagressive or pushy about it, and you should be fine. If he keeps talking to you, great
