no. you can give a false one and create a mail account using another name. I tried it but gave up after one day. Too boring.

No, you don't have to give out your full name. The full name thing is just to help others find you if they ever decided to search for your name (like, people you know). You can use a nickname or just shorten your name like you suggested.
