Myspace is good! Try going on bands pages that sounds like yours and adding their fans - then message them asking to check you out.

Done this for a friends band, it's really good, also play local shows!

Get a gig at a local hangout and perform. Do it for free if necessary to help build a following of fans. Later, as your popularity increases you can start performing for a fee. Of course, get a website to further promote yourself and provide a calendar of your scheduled acts as well as a list of the songs you do.

I know people (independent/alternative bands) get a lot of attention through myspace. Also face book, twitter etc. Flyiers, radio advertisements or campus posters help.

Distribute your work with the Creative Commons License, then ask file sharing websites (such as isohunt.com) to promote it.

some bands do this, and offer a way to donate to the band (via paypal) and can earn over $1000 in the first week!!!

Network with other bands. Offer them places to stay and a opening gig with you in return for the same in their home town. Get a street team together and let your fans help promote you. Myspace is a good source -- I've booked many bands thru there. Flyer's don't get a lot of results...
Try independent radio stations in your area. They all have websites.

Lastly, don't give up. Get out there and play as much as you can.

Good luck!

Myspace helps a lot...add people on myspace like crazy. And if they have 500+ friends on myspace, have them "wh0re" you, which means they would post a bulletin promoting you and asking their friends to add you.

You can even join add sites like : zombieadds.com and such...

Then flyers are always nice, especially in cafes, stop signs, poles, put them under wipers on cars on college campuses.

Touring won't do much unless you already have a mediocre audience to start out with, but if you do, be involved with them. Like have merch, be really lively on stage, and play for cheap every now and then...even though it's a bit of a sacrifice, it always gains attention.

Having lots of friends is a plus, they can spread the word. However making lots of friends is just as well because they'll spread the word as well and it's a cool thing to do anyway...

& of course...there's YouTube...that's almost a must if you want to get fame fast.

the best way to promote your band it to spent the money. go get your self 200 blank cd's put 2 songs(original) on each disk, and hit the streets. hit the local music store ask them to put free demos on the counter. every time you see someone on the street explain the kin of music you play and give them one. make sure to put your info on the cd case so if they want to buy more they can. if your band is good everything will happen. when sales starts to get good get a Label and copy-write it. it will cost ya round 1000 bucks but its worth it. go independent. all it takes is the right person to hear it so get it out there.

yeah make a myspace. put songs on youtube and make a website(or just use your myspace/youtube as your site). maybe try street performing and let everyone know who your band is & maybe handout flyers at a street performance that has info about you guys and a link to your website. good luck!!

if you can afford it, put out a demo and sell it cheaply.

put on shows locally at first until you think you are good enough to tour. touring can screw up lots of new bands.

online stuff like making a Purevolume account, Myspace account, YouTube account, those are good ideas. that way if people see you/hear you/hear about you they'll be able to find you again. but Twitter is kind of unnecessary if you are just starting out.

fliers are good if you put them in the right places. example: local coffee shop = good idea. local elementary school = not quite as smart.

and yeah having lots of friends/networking whatever, that's a good idea too. making friends with people in the industry or other bands is a great idea.
