Facebook doesn't know who 'you' are, how are they supposed to know it's not YOU who have the fake profile?

In short, Facebook provides the site, users provide the information, and Facebook takes (nor should they) no responsibility for the identity of their users.

No, they don't require proof to open a profile so anyone can do it to anyone.. you need to find out who did set it up.. they may can give you a ip address you can trace . then you need to go after them. however being they don't have the money facebook has doubt you will.. your just like most people looking for a way to get rich over nothing .. It not like they posted nude pictures of you .. just contact facebiook and there close it . then just forget about it .

If the fake profile causes damages to your reputation and you can prove it then you can trace down the individual who made the account and sue them personally for libel. But other than that I don't see you having any sort of case, just like you can't sue a newspaper for putting you in the obituaries.

If you can prove who did it, file an anti harassment order against them. Once that is heard in court, I would get a cease and desist order stopping them from their egregious behavior.

Then file a civil suit for libel, defamation of character and the likes. I would ask for a large amount of damages especially if it is ruining your reputation or causing you to lose income.
