for some pet owners who did that, its just one way of showing their love to their pets. some might just trying to make identity for their pets though social networks..

I have a flickr account to store pictures of my dog online that I dip into now and then to send to others or just browse through for enjoyment when I'm working and taking a quick five minute coffee break.
Some are set so anyone can see the photos and others only I can see.

I just barely keep up with my own Facebook and Twitter, let alone having them for my dogs.
If people have time for it, to each their own. I sure don't.
I have my own Flickr that features pictures of my dogs; I also occasionally post pics of my dogs on Twitter. That's how I choose to show them off.
