Because if you volunteer that kind of information about yourself, they have every right to snoop at your profile. Some companies may be concerned that certain people, such as party animals or political activists, could be embarrassing to them. If it is people-related job, showing that you are a socially active person who can talk to new people may show that you are well-suited for the job.

Some social media profiles like LinkedIn are professional and are used for showing your skills sets. If an application is asking you for sites that you are involved on share things that make you relevant to the position or show you in a good light.
