As per Facebook Rules, yes it is mandatory and you cant avoid it but there are still some people who are out of it but they wont be for long .. in couple of days .. facebook will force it on you..
but timeline aint a bad thing ..

Originally, it was inevitable! However, given the amount of complains Facbook has received about Timeline, it is still a choice to stick with the old profile. Having said that, we do not know when Facebook will have a mind swing.
