Once logged on, go settings, account settings, then click deactivate account. This will not delete it, only deactivate it. Don't log on again - this will reactivate your account. If you really want to delete your account go to page http://www.facebook.com/help/contact_generic.php here you can contact facebook and ask them to delete your account.

Go to this page:
http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account
Click "Submit".
Your account will be permanently deleted within a few days.
This method is official and should be complete, i.e. no need to delete individual photos, comments, messages or items from your profile or anywhere else on Facebook!
