If you search for someone on Facebook, will it return every single person who has that name or similar names or could it be slightly unreliable and not show up everyone. Also, if you search for someone's first name, will it show everyone with that name?

If you search with first name, it will come up with your friends and mutual friends or somehow related. And then randomly. Search results goes like this:
Friends > Mutual friends(Friends of Friends) > Random people
You can also search with email address of the concerned people. It's quite easy. I also usually ask people I meet about their email address, so that finding them on FB is easy. Hope this helps!
