I was browsing people on are you interested app on facebook and I came accross my boyfriend and it said recently online
does this mean he was recently on facebook or he was recently using this app?

One have to be logged in to use facebook apps. Apps displayed on facebook page does not necessarily means one used the apps. It may have been used by one's friends, which appears on one's page, or suggested to by one's friends.
