are you a generalist or a specialist? - James - 02-22-2014 06:57 AM

I feel more like a generalist. I don't feel like I've necessarily mastered anything, but I'm good at lots of smaller things. My skills are all over the place. I'd like to focus on one and be the best I can be at one skill, but i can't pick, and I feel like I'd get too bored.
I'm a Master student, undergrad was environmental science, and interdisciplinary program, my degree now is in biology. This means that as an undergrad I focused on geography, ecology, management and policy (with some chemistry and biology)- now I'm focusing on insect behavior. My undergrad honors was using Twitter to track trends an extract geographical information from geotagged tweets. Now, my honors thesis is based on the behavior of a specific caterpillar that proves to be a forest pest. I have many skills with computers - I know python, java-script, html & css, c++. I also do freelance graphic design stuff using Illustrator and Photoshop. I'm familiar with music editing/creating programs like Ableton Live and Soundbooth. I'm bilingual (English and french) and I'm currently learning Japanese and American Sign Language. I'm trying to write a short novel. I can beat the hard level songs in Dance Dance Revolution. And finally, I can juggle (up to 4 only though Confused ).
I dunno where I want to stick to... Help?

I feel like a generalist on my job, I'm on the surface of many statistical applications, but not deep into any of them.

I'm a polymath. Jack of all trades, ace of MANY.

I'm a generalist. I can do many thongs with no degree of success at any of them.

I'm a Generalist. I try to specialize in a little bit of Everything. Wink

I'm generally a generalist, but I can think of a few specific situations in which I was a specialist.
