It is the means of getting the person who you 'poke' to update their page if they have not done so for a while.

Poking is an action of tapping and/or softly jabbing another person with the tip of one's finger or a sharp object. This is usually done to gain the other's attention. However, it is also commonly used as a form of teasing, joking around with, or irritating him or her; particularly when performed repeatedly. Poking can also lead to 'poking fights' or 'poking wars', where two people continually poke each other for entertainment or mutual aggravation.

when you poke someone it is the same as hug or smile on fb

If u poke someone on facebook u can view there profile....a message will go to their email saying you have poked them and they can accept.. if that makes sense!!
