i just got the iPhone today and downloaded the app but on my laptop i noticed somebody poked me but i could find it on the app on my phone.. is there anyway to poke somebody back or find out that you have been poked on the facebook app for iPhone?

On the app, no, unfortunately. You can't see who poked you, you can only go to that person's profile and poke them.
So what I do, since I'm in a ton of poke wars right now ;D is open up Safari and go to the Facebook mobile site. I have the app AND I keep the mobile site on Safari 24/7.
You can't see in the mobile site, but go to the bottom and touch "Full Site". It should come up with what you see on your computer screen and you'll be able to tell from there. (:
