It's used for social media.. You can search certain things by typing in #swag or #summer Etc. that way you get a bunch of pictures/tweets/whatever else that all have a similar theme. The number sign is the hash tag

It's a way of categorizing your question/ post. Just imagine hashtag as meaning "category:"
So if wrote something like. I love celebrities #ladygaga. Someone could look for the hashtag ladygaga and find your post about celebrities.
