Meaning? It's just a fun social networking sight where you post pictures and look at other pictures. You can keep up with friends and actually "see" what they are doing. I don't understand you question fully...what do you mean by "meaning"?

To share photographs... it's useful if, say, a grand-mother wanted to look at a photograph of her grand-child. One would just post a photograph on Instagram of the child.

Many photographers use Instagram to get people to see their work. Other people use Instagram because they can put an effect on their photos to make them look good.
When you put up a photo, people can like it and comment, but this feature is not being used this way. People who put up photos tag their photos so they will get many likes, and this is why Instagram is weird, because you can't tell if people like your photo or if it's for follow4follow purposes...
I use Instagram to upload the photos I create and take. I do not use the effects, I just like the showcasing on the profile, and it's a great forum for people like me (I study photography in school)...
