Social work or history major? - TIMMY S - 03-02-2014 10:48 AM

I was wondering what would be better as far as career wise I love history but I also love helping others. I could do counseling with a social work major but I also could become a teacher I want to know what would be better job wise.. I am also aware that teacher and social workers do not get paid a lot.. thanks for any help you can provide..

Career-wise, both have their advantages and disadvantages. To teach history in public schools, you would need to be in an Education program (which may or may not allow you to also pursue a history major or minor). The job market for social studies teachers right now is very competitive because it is heavily oversupplied. However, the job market for social workers is also problematic right now because so many state and local governments are facing budget problems.

My advice is to pursue the path you love best. I'll also add that, these days, most social workers are expected to have a Masters Degree. Whereas teachers generally are not expected to have a Masters Degree until after they have taught for 4-6 years.
