I already know about the alternative name option but that's in the parenthesis at the side, but I want my actual displayed name to be a nickname. Specifically "EverybodyHates Phil". It says that they prefer you to use a real name but I see people with apostrophes and other characters in their name so how did they do that?

facebook used to allow this, but they dont anymore - they now expect you to always use your real name, because people were abusing it
if you see a fake name like that, they just havent been reported yet - go ahead and report them for it and their account will get suspended for breaking the rules
there is no trick to get around it
