Are my parents invading my privacy? - Lauren - 03-03-2014 03:56 PM

My mom took my iPod without me knowing and cracked the screen lock code to get into it. She then went through my facebook, twitter and tumblr accounts. My facebook and twitter don't really have anything personal on it, but she went through my tumblr and now thinks I'm depressed or have other issues, when in reality a lot of the posts are sarcastic/humorous. She told me it was "on the internet therefore open to anyone" but I have no pictures or information about me on my blog that would make anyone else reading it know that I run it. She only saw it because she went through my iPod. I like to write and share my work online because I'm writing a book, but no matter how anonymous I am on an account my mom always finds it and reads it. She doesn't normally say anything but I want her to just give me space because I do tell her what I do on the internet (I told her I had tumblr) but it's humiliating when she makes all this public when I am anonymous on the internet and had she not searched my ipod/computer she would know know I run that account. Is she invading my privacy?
They also don't have any reason to search my stuff. I am a good kid, don't do drugs or drink at all, get very good grades and spend time with my family.

The problem lies deeper than just invading your privacy, the base of it is that she doesn't trust you. Another thing that might be important is your age, and how mature you act around your mom. I would personally say she is, because you should have a right to say what you want, especially on an anonymous site. As for Facebook, maybe she could get one and become friends with you. Best of luck!

My mom does WORSE. She hacks my iPod also AND gets into my Facebook and digs through all my apps. AND she reads all my txts I sent, PLUS she wants to know EVERYONE I talk to. So believe me when I say it's invading privacy. To a certain extent it makes sense until it's hacking your iPod...

yes they r cuz i guess they thought they would find a deep "dark secret"(lol) but still they should have more confidance in u and trust. u should tell them u dnt have issues and to plz have more respect for u.

Tell your mom to back off. Say, "Mom, I know you're looking out for me, but I'm not comfortable with you going through my accounts. I promise to tell you if something is up." Or...show your mom this if she doesn't mind you posting stuff about her! Tell her the truth, and say you're upset that she doesn't trust you.
