Like just through YouTube and cyberconcerts?

Not widespread, but they can do OK.

I think that they could be pretty popular, but not widespread. Take Alex Day for example, he is a youtuber who is a musician and a funny person. He released one of his singles, without a record label and it got to #4 in the charts. His next single got almost that high as well. He did all this through youtube without going on tour or with a record label.

Of Monsters and Men from Iceland proves this. They weren't even popular in the US until a radio station in Philly got a hold of "Little Talks".

I was a musician trying to crack it in the industry in the 80's and 90's. It was a hard slog and there was little chance of success due to competition and lack of avenues for promotion.

Now, we still have the competition but you have a plethora of ways you can promote yourself via on online presence. You can have a youtube channel, a Facebook page, Twitter and many other online resources.

While this is a great way to promote yourself, you still have to find ways of making yourself stand out from the crowd and connect with YOUR audience. The competition is fierce! There are several books and articles on online/social media that will get you on your way. Like all things it takes research, tenacity and a little lucky for things to go your way.

Good luck! Hope it helps.
