I recently lost one of my friends of my contact lists and none of us deleted one another.
could this happen on facebook?

Facebook should not have that problem, try sending a problem form to Facebook (look around on site). If this persists see a facebook moderator.

Sorry bud, but your "friend" is either lying, or too damn dumb to be using facebook if they're deleting people without knowing what they're doing.
Facebook doesn't delete friends unless their entire profile gets dumped off the site, and since that isn't what's happenned here, the blame goes right back to the user.
