Some of the direct messages I've sent have a curved arrow next to them, pointing to the left, others don't. It does not seem to make any difference as to whether they've been read as I've had replies from both types. I've looked this up online including on this site and it seems its supposed to mean the message has been sent, yet as I say on some dm's it doesn't show an arrow. Thanks.

ohhh the little curved arrow shows that you were the one to reply last... so if a message has that curved arrow, it means that you're still waiting for a reply from the other person, not the other way around (:
