Yes! It's okay to do that! That's what Facebook was made for, so you can connect with the social networks or the world. Just send a nice message with your friend request (Example: "Hi, my name is *blank*. I'm new to the Facebook network, would it be cool if we were friends?"), and you will have a lot of friends in no time. Look at your friend's friends and get to know some of them.
