If there is any way to get a patent on my web site idea? - v - 10-15-2012 07:45 PM

I have an idea for website, I'm sure that it's not gonna be next facebook or anything, but I would like to get some rights for my idea. If there is any way to make sure that no one else will copy an idea or it's free market and anybody can copy it?

The layout or design of a website is not patentable (this would be covered by a copyright - much the same way a book or movie is protected). However, if you have developed a novel way to perform some function on your website (i.e., encrypt passwords), then you could obtain a patent for this, as long as you have a savvy attorney.

Patents are regulated by federal law and the USPTO - not your secretary of state.
