The post above mine seems to be naming concepts in marketing rather than techniques. Here are some actual techniques a business can utilize.
1) Create targeted content related to your product or service that is informational or entertaining. It can be a video, or an essay, a white-paper, or a funny dialogue. You can spread this content on social networking sites like Facebook, twitter and Digg. You can also spread it on article submission sites, and you can add it to your blog or even link it up and integrate it with other Advertisements.
2) Optimize your website for Marketing- Include buttons and calls to action that allow and encourage people to share your site/content virally on the web with other sites.
3) Pitch yourself to the Online and offline press. Is there a group of blogs that might be related to your business area? Create an angle that makes you applicable enough to mention. You can take this same angle and pitch it to traditional journalists. Just make sure you target to their areas. Do your research.
4) Engage audiences on Niche sites- Does your industry have any tie-ins with any niche communities? If so, become active with them. Figure out ways that your business can participate in their events or their discussions- Is there any synergy you could possibly Co
