When I make a comment on Sams post for an example I get notifications that other people also commented on Sam's post... How to stop getting only the ones about other people who are not in my friends list commenting on Sam's post?.. .. Can that be done? If so where in the settings? I looked everywhere. Which box should I check or uncheck?

when you get the notification, click on the little popup that appears to open that top
then look between the post and the first comment for the UNFOLLOW link and click it
