This article covers most scenarios and tips regarding how to protect your iPad on public WiFi connections. As a long-time Apple user, I recommend using encryption to safeguard iOS devices (both the phone and tablet) against the security risks of third-party WiFi.

This is different from iOS's own sandboxed security and is more about the unique threats and issues of freely available WiFi.

Some points to consider:

* Understand that most free WiFi hotspots are unsafe and do not have adequate security.

* Avoid using public WiFi for confidential data. Email, Facebook and general internet surfing / browsing may be "okay" for the most part as long as your iPad or iPhone has the latest security patches installed.

* Consider using an iPad VPN if you're a heavy user of Public WiFi services. This is important for data privacy in such places as the coffee shop, airports, shopping malls and university that have free (but not so safe) WiFi internet.
