although people say they want their privacy, why then are social networking cites such as Facebook and Twitter being coupled with tracking technologies such as iPhone's "find me" apps so extremely popular?

People love attention. Its a form of energy. We love to spy and read and properly gossip about others like there's nothing better to do....
Facebook is classic, you have adults counting how many friends they have and ticking boxes.
