Or really the appearance of loading faster? As opposed to having an entire timeline open immediately on the first page?

im guessing the reason they created it was to provide an easier way to view older information
but yes, if they showed the entire timeline on the first page load event, it would take forever for it all to load, which is why it only loads certain time periods at a time
