I've only had my account a week and i haven't even used it yet. I have no content and no reason to have followers.

People may know you or just add people to get friends

You'll get followed on twitter randomly by spam accounts, bots, random people, more spam...
Active users will get added by all of the above, plus be found in twitter searches for key words.
Your friends may find your account by searching for your email address, but my guess is that you don't recognize the people following you or you wouldn't have asked here.
There are plenty of real and active people on twitter that will add you, but there is no escape from spam on the internet.
