What is the difference between Group and Pages on Facebook? - Steven - 10-15-2012 07:50 PM

There is two sections on profile about me. Groups and Pages. What's the differences?

Groups are usually for funny things, example: "I hate not being able to sleep because there's a small bit of light in my room". These are things that you can relate to. Pages are for "fans", so if you see a page like "The Simpsons" you'd join it because you agree with it and you're a fan of the show.

Although lately Facebookers have been making things meant for groups in the pages section. This is because the groups thing has a limit whereas the fan pages don't (to my knowledge).

First and foremost the 2 major differences include:

Unlike groups, fan pages are visible to unregistered people and are thus indexed (important for reputaion management, for example);
Unlike pages, groups allow to send out “bulk invite” (you can easily invite all your friends to join the group while with pages you will be forced to drop some invites manually). Groups are thus better for viral marketing, meaning that any group member can also send bulk invites to the friends of his.
Now let’s go into some details:

Key Feature Facebook Page Facebook Group
“Ugly” URLs No Yes
Hosting a discussion Yes Yes
Discussion wall, and discussion forum Yes Yes
Extra applications added Yes No
Messaging to all members Yes (via updates) Yes (via PMs)
Visitor statistics Yes (“Page insights”) No
Video and photo public exchange Yes Yes
“Related” event creation and invitation Yes No
Promotion with social ads Yes (never tried it) No

To conclude:

Pages are generally better for a long-term relationships with your fans, readers or customers;
Groups are generally better for hosting a (quick) active discussion and attracting quick attention.
Hope this can give you a clear understanding!

Pages are for bands, celebrities, and companies, big and small.

Groups are more for common interests, beliefs and causes. They're for bringing a group of people together based on that particular common interest. Also, there are certain things you can do only for that section.

On a page, it doesn't show you who the creator or admin of the page is. You can't make anyone admin either.

In a group, the admin will show up as creator and you can add officers and admins all you want. You can also make groups private, closed or open to friends.

There's a lot of different options you can do with each section. Groups are better because you have more freedom with the settings.

You can only join about 300 groups on Facebook and I think for pages you can join many many more. I have joined like over 1,700 pages so far. lol.
