I do not think they make money but i ma guessing that the more pple who sign up or the more the people enter the site the more they make money. I am not sure. Sorry

there are companies paying for advertisement on these sites..
if a site is visited by many people, like facebook, companies or corporations invest their money on advertisements and put ads on this most visited sites.. so if you have a site that is visited by many people, there may be people paying you to have ads on your site..
thats how you make money on a site like facebook..

Same as almost any website- even yahoo- advertisements. And lots of them, the more popular a website is, the more the advertisement is worth.
