The original market was College students. It expanded viraly by people getting invited through emails.

Facebook is the biggest market for wide range of product,it depend on what product do yu have. Think about it logically for a second - Facebook gets more traffic than Google, and has over 600 million members who regularly log in to interact.If Facebook was a country, it would have the 3rd biggest population in the world and be twice as big as the United States.
Seriously - Facebook has twice as many users as live in the whole USA. Insane huh? So that's what makes this so incredibly profitable for everybody... if you take a massive supply of hot, targeted traffic like that, and add the simplest, easiest way to turn that into money you've ever seen.
