Does marketing fall under business? - carina - 03-19-2014 04:46 PM

I want to major in Marketing. Some of the colleges I've looked at have Business as a major but it's not very specific, like UC Berkeley. I looked at some descriptions of majoring in Business and it said you might have marketing as a class. So if I majored in Business, would I be able to work in Marketing? Or does it not work that way?
Thanks!

Yes, marketing usually falls under business. Note that there are only a few UC campuses that offer a business major (I think only Berkeley, Irvine and Riverside) - Business Economics is not the same thing and does not include marketing.

But you can work in marketing with any major. Two of my good friends are advertising execs in LA and their majors were English and History. If the college you want to go to doesn't offer business or marketing, consider something else that requires a lot of writing or public speaking or maybe design work - probably anything in the Humanities, Arts or Social Sciences would be fine. Ask about minoring in business or even just taking an elective class in marketing. The most important thing to do will be to get internships or part-time jobs so that you have lots of work experience, and impress everyone you work with so that they will either hire you, or recommend you to their colleagues.
