A lot, hacking is a federal crime. Hacking is defined as accessing any computer network or account you don't have explicit permission from the owner to access. Even if you just steal their password, you could get several years in federal prison or a huge fine.

You don't get into trouble if you know what you're doing like the back of your hand. But if you're a noob to hacking and thinks it's "cool" to hurt someone, you have a one way ticket to federal prison coming at ya.
