Hashtags are a way of tracking topics or about things on the social media(Twitter, Tumblr, Intsagram, etc). When you use hashtags, you can help people who are interested in your subject. Examples such as
#House #Food #Morning

According to Dictionary.com a hashtag is: (on social-networking Web sites) a word or phrase preceded by a hash mark (#), used within a message to identify a keyword or topic of interest and facilitate a search for it.
I've never heard of this one either. Looks like we both learned something new
