Honestly, it's all personal preference and what you are looking for. I was actually reading an article that lists the 100 best and top rated apps in the Google Play market from 2013:

I am currently getting a new tablet tomorrow and am looking for app recommendations too. This covers basic categories, but I found it really helpful
