It happens sometimes, my iPhone will ring as if I got a text, and then I check my inbox but I don't have any new texts. Does this happen to anyone else?

It could be a notification for FB, Kik, Twitter, etc and not a call ring.

Additionally to EIE's list it could be mail (this is likely if you have mail set up).
