it's like tagging something. Like say u post a picture on facebook and your best friends in it. You'd tag #bestfriend

Yes...I haven't kept up with Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, etc. - so I never use it.

I have no idea where hashtag came from.
I need to look it up.

BTW: When you call banks and other places they still say 'press pound'
