There are 2 ways

You can deactivate your account in the settings
In the future you will be able to reactivate your account if you want

Or you can

Permanently delete your facebook. To do this you will have to search for a group that tells you how to permanently delete your facebook account. The link provided will take you to a page and after putting in your password you account will be deleted permanently after 14 days. This method doesn't allow you to reactivate your account.

Great question! And very relevant for many today...

Facebook allows you to Deactivate your account easily by accessing Security Settings via your Account Settings. However, if you wish to complete remove your account, this is done by clicking via the link here:

https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account

Remember, this option is without recovery so be sure you are ready to fully remove your account. Facebook recommends downloading your account history before taking this step, just to preserve all of your information offline.

Good luck!

either deactivate [temporary deactivating] or deleting your account [permanent deactivation]

for deactivate go to settings: security: deactivate your account
but after deactivating if you log in your email id again any time it will reactivate

2nd way is deleting, go to google search for "how to delete facebook account" and you will find a link saying how do i permanently delete my facebook account, and in the paragraph choose "let us know"
