When people take out an ad in Facebook, or any web site, who does the money go to? Is it paid right to the account of the person who started the site?
no i meant, how does facebook profit? does it go straight to their account?

On Facebook the business creates ads. You can target any keyword in someones profile, even names. This includes demographics, sex, age, location, interests, relationship status, etc. You pay per click. So you can have a million impressions (times the ad has shown) but you have the option to Pay Per Click which is really beneficial to most businesses. As you segment down to your target market, the price per click gets higher (usually .70-.90 cents) BUT you are more likely to generate business from the targeted person. You can also set a daily limit so you don't overspend. The min. is $1 a day. Multiple campaigns in multiple areas can be set up! It is VERY efficient for online marketers!

This is why facebook is not free in the end, this is how they make money! When you sign up your info can be used to target you to a specific product/service. This is why if you are single it is usually single ads popping up.

You can make money with google ad words but you have to own a site which drives lots of views per day otherwise you won't make anything. People pay per click to randomly have their ads shown on a website that has simliar customers as their own business. These are "content" based ads that appear on similar sites.
