According to Alexa, twitter traffic has gone down fast from 8.2% to 2.6% in the last few weeks : http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/twitter.com

Website traffic can vary by day, week, month and year the same as the stock market is can be unsettled.
In Twitter's case it could be that people are switching to Facebook because of the outages that Twitter experiences and that Facebook offers more features.
