Yes, in some cases.

I think it totally depends on what your relationship with that person was, and why you decided them to cut off contact with them - and this would hold true for any social networking site.

For example - a lot of people have loads of people on their Friend list, with whom they are not really "friends".
They might just be people who work/study in the same organisation that you are a part of, but you might not have much interaction with them at all.
When you delete such a person off your list, I don't think you need to give them an explanation - they might not even notice.

However, if its someone with whom you used chat/exchange messages with on a regular basis - then, yes...its nice if you send them an explanatory message before you unfriend them.
I don't really use Facebook, but I am basing this on normal/regular social interactions that I have - and I think it should apply to Facebook too.
