Does deactivating my facebook account temporarily make my past news feed postings (or postings to friends' walls, photos, etc) invisible to others?

Deactivating your Facebook account will make it completely unavailable until you re-enable it.

Yes, if you de-activate your Facebook, your profile, pictures, statues, ect will all disapear until you re-activate your facebook again.

When you deactivate your account, your profile and all its associated information are immediately made inaccessible to other Facebook users. Although this means that you effectively disappear from the service, your information will remain saved by Facebook so that you can reactivate your account whenever you want after 24 hours have passed since the deactivation.
