You can't really, as it would be a violation of one's privacy. I'm sure you wouldn't want anyone knowing your address and sending you Spam email and anonymous mail. What you can do though is join social media sites like facebook, Google buzz, twitter and myspace. They offer searches based on the person's name. Facebook is the best bet since people with an Internet connection are most likely to join. So go to those and find your friend, once there you can communicate, email based communication is fastly becoming the thing of the past as people look to arrange their information on social media sites. Not possible, unless you know that his name is the same as his Gmail account. What you could do is sign up for a Gmail account yourself through Google, then start participating in Google Buzz, and search for your friend's name in that way.
But keep in mind that Google is not stupid, and they offer good privacy protections. Even if your friend uses his name as his gmail account user id, Google offers the option to select an anonomyous all-numeric profile name, in order that one cannot be found even if someone DOES know your email account name. And that's true whether you use your actual name or not for your Gmail account userid.
There are things like Open Social in Google that will help you connect with people that you interact with regularly, but none of this is designed to facilitate finding people that don't want to be found.
