I only want certain individuals to know I am on face book is that possible.

The most important is to always set your profile to private by using the privacy settings.
If you don't want people to add you but instead you adding others, you can change your friend request settings.
Since you want certain individuals to know you're on Facebook, tell them yourself and don't tell others, simple as that.

Go to privacy settings!!
For example- see my profile http://www.facebook.com/ankit.bagwan
you can only see some stuff of me cause I turned them down to friends!
