Someone I know opened a Facebook account in order to enter some contests but didn't tell anyone she had a Facebook account. Then she started to get people she knew contacting her through Facebook. How did people find her when she told no one. By the way I have never had a Facebook account and I am concerned about my privacy if I ever do open one.

People can search for other users by name. People she knows looked her up.....
For instance say I was on facebook and wanted to try and find an old friend from school, all I have to do is search for that persons name.
If you are concerned with privacy stay away from facebook. Facebook is the exact opposite of privacy.......
