Is Facebook hyped as something its not? - jcgonzmo - 10-15-2012 08:03 PM

Everyone talks about facebook. However, it is just a social website where you see pics, write on walls and play crappy games. however, people are trying to sell it like it is the new virtual world, the new market place, the new real social substitute. IS GOING TO BE, is the selling phrase. Like it is going to kill Amazon.com, or Microsoft, or Google, or Apple, etc. In the end, it is just a time wasting site. Dontyou think people are overselling it?
I was debating with my friend the other day. He told me that Zuckerberg is going to be the richest man of the world. His argument was that with 500 million users (including fake accounts) Facebook has many potential customers for whatever they try to sell. This argument, is the argument most people use to explain why Facebook is the like the 2nd coming of Christ. However, I do not agree with that. Only becasue it has so many users, it does not mean it can substitute other services. People will prefer to sell things through facebook instead of amazon. People prefer to talk on a facebook phone instead of an iphone. Do people really want tv with facebook? Only becasuse it is agreat website, it does not mean it can be great at everything. It is like saying that because people like to lay on beds, a bed is going to be able to substitute a table. One cannot to substitute the other. Facebook is a great website, but a time wasting site. Watch pictures, write messages and play games. No More!
Zuckerberg net worth is an estimate. People are valuing facebook because of its potential, no for its REAL ACTUAL WORTH. They value Facebook for what it can be, or what it can earn, not for what is doing right now. Zuckerberg is owner of Facebook, his net worth is that. Facebook is being valued more than Avon! Avon is 10billion dollar corporation with more than 1 billion in profits. Hence, Facebook is kind of overvalued right?

Yes. Like you said, it's just a time wasting sight. But then again, so are 99.99% of the other websites I enjoy.

Yes, actually, I agree with you, I find it boring as h*ell, I much prefer Amazon, ebay or even Answers!

Geez, thanks for the thumbs down

Im confused also on how the owner has made a fortune (6.9 billion) providing a free service...thats something to question.

It has lost it's appeal, most people don't post anything interesting or they will use some sort of game like farmville that will spam the home-screen, it is good for sharing photos but no other real plus points.
